The Best Places to Elope in Wisconsin

Filed in elopements, Intimate weddings — December 31, 2020

What comes to mind when you think of Wisconsin? Cheese, beer, maybe some cows?

Well, maybe that’s true, but did you know Wisconsin also has some pretty incredible scenery – lakes, forests, rugged shorelines, and so much more. You don’t have to travel far for gorgeous backdrops on your elopement day! I’m a Wisconsin girl and have spent years exploring all that this state has to offer – so if you’re looking for gorgeous places to say your vows, I’ve got you covered. Check out some of my favorite places to elope in Wisconsin!

Door County

Door County is located on a peninsula, nestled right between Green Bay and Lake Michigan. It’s known for the long shoreline, 300 miles to be exact, perfect for watching the sunset. In town, there are acres of orchards, art galleries, delicious cherry pie, and local brews to try, or you can explore the lake and stroll through the state parks!

Newport State Park

Newport state park, on the north end of the Door peninsula, has over 2,300 acres of forest! You can elope along the shoreline of Lake Michigan, or take a backpacking trip into the wilderness for some solitude and a private place to say your vows. Newport is even designated as a Dark Sky Park, which means it’s dark enough for stargazing! You can explore and adventure around during the day, then end your elopement with a view of the night sky.

Whitefish Dunes State Park

Along Lake Michigan, there are rolling sand dunes and fields of dry grass protected by Whitefish Dunes State Park. There are miles of trails through the dunes and through the surrounding forest, so you can elope on the beach of Lake Michigan, or amongst the trees. If you’re having guests at your elopement, there is a picnic shelter overlooking the lake that can be reserved!

Cave Point County Park

Cave Point County Park is right next to Whitefish Dunes, and offers incredible views. The shoreline is lined by limestone that’s been dissolved and carved through centuries of harsh waves from Lake Michigan. The waves can get up to 30 feet in height – a breathtaking sight from the top of the rock! There are tons of caverns carved into the stone, and if you want to descend to the water, you can rent a kayak to spot the formations hidden from view on land.

Bayfield and the Apostle Islands

Bayfield is a small harbor town located on Lake Superior, with a community dedicated to preserving the natural landscape. Bayfield even has the most green businesses of any city in Wisconsin! The town is known for its bustling art scene and unique local shops and restaurants.

Bayfield is also a doorway to the Apostle Islands, which are a collection of 22 islands on Lake Superior that are highlighted by gorgeous rock formations and historic lighthouses. These islands are one of the best places to elope in Wisconsin, and you can explore sandstone cliffs, sea caves, lighthouses, and pristine natural beaches. Finish off your elopement day with a kayak rental or a sailing trip!

Kettle Moraine State Forest

The hilly, wooden terrain of the Kettle Moraine State Forest makes for a beautiful backdrop for your elopement! In the spring, wildflowers bloom, and in the fall, the leaves erupt in bright orange, red, and yellows.

Loew Lake

This gorgeous spot in the Kettle Moraine State Forest is one of the best places to elope in Wisconsin! A short trail goes from the parking lot under a thick canopy of pine trees, through open meadows, across a peaceful river, and down to Loew Lake. The lake is pretty secluded, making it the perfect spot to say your vows.

Wisconsin Interstate State Park

Wisconsin’s oldest state park, Interstate is located along the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway. You can see sweeping views of the gorge and of the river that runs through the rocky, tree lined landscape. The park also features the Ice Age Interpretive Center, with films, photographs, and murals all about the ancient glaciers that formed the riverway.

Big Bay State Park

Big Bay State Park sits on Madeline Island, the largest of the Apostle Islands. You can take a ferry and explore the park, with beaches, campgrounds, and nature trails, and spend your elopement day adventuring around!

Paradise Springs Nature Trail

This is one of the most unique elopement locations – it’s easily accessible, with a half mile trail leading to an abandoned stone building. There’s a natural (not hot) spring with crystal clear water. This spot is perfect for couples looking for a unique, charming, and easy to reach location for their elopement!
