Iceland Elopement Locations – the 10 Best Places to Get Married in Iceland

Filed in Ceremony, elopements, Intimate weddings — June 17, 2021

I probably don’t even need to explain why Iceland is an incredible place for an elopement – if you’ve seen photos of the fjords, glaciers, icebergs, and waterfalls (or you’ve seen them in person), you know that Iceland’s rugged landscape is absolutely breathtaking. Even as it grows in popularity, Iceland remains a wild, magical place. If you’re wanting a wedding day that’s unlike any other, a wedding day that perfectly reflects you and your love, a wedding day spent exploring and adventuring, an Iceland elopement might be the answer! But, you’ll need to find a place to tie the knot – so here are the 10 best places to get married in Iceland.

1. Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach

On the southern coast of Iceland is Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach, where the turbulent ocean waves crash onto the black sand along the shoreline, creating the perfect moody backdrop. This spot is famous for the sea stacks that tower over the water, and the boulders and rock walls on the beach. There is even a secluded cave – but be careful, it often becomes inaccessible at high tide!

2. Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon

Here, the placid blue waters are home to the icebergs that break off of the nearby Breiðamerkurjökull Glacier and float across the lagoon. The icebergs make their way into the Atlantic Ocean, and watching them glide through the water is a majestic site. This is one of the best places to get married in Iceland if you want to elope somewhere with unique views!

3. Kirkjufellsfoss

Kirkjufellsfoss, a waterfall that cuts through green meadows, with Mt Kirkjufell in the background, is one of the most photographed spots in Iceland. You can elope by the falls for an easily accessible place to get married, or hike the steep trail to the summit of Kirkjufell for a more private spot to say your vows – but the latter is for experienced adventurers only, as the trail is definitely a challenge!

4. Blue Ice Cave

This is one of the best places to get married in Iceland, and it’s definitely one of the most unique! Ice caves are formed when geothermal heat begins to melt glaciers. Because glaciers are always on the move, the ice formation will drift away, causing a hollow space to form. You can walk through the tunnels created by the ice caves, and marvel at the turquoise blue walls surrounding you!

5. Hornstrandir Nature Preserve

The Hornstrandir Nature Preserve is one of the best places to get married in Iceland for any couple who wants to elope somewhere truly remote. It is completely uninhabited, and only accessible by boat – so once you reach Hornstrandir, you’ll be hiking! You can elope with a quick day trip and explore some of the shorter trails, or spend several days trekking across the cliffs and meadows, and camping along the way.

6. Blatindur Mountain

The peak of Blatindur rises over the valley, and requires a steep hike to reach the summit. You’ll walk through a grassy bank, and end up at the top, with the meadows behind you and a cliff on the other side. The views of the valley and the ocean below are breathtaking, and worth the steep climb!

7. Seljalandsfoss

Amongst Iceland’s many waterfalls is Seljalandfoss, a 200 foot waterfall on the country’s southern coast. It’s most unique feature is that you can walk a pathway around the falls, and even get behind them. Be prepared for things to get misty!

8. Fjaðrárgljúfur Canyon

The steep walls of the canyon form a corridor, which the Fjaðrá river flows through. It’s an incredible view, and can be reached with just a 15 minute walk from the parking area, making this one of the best places to get married in Iceland for couples who want an easily accessible elopement location with incredible views!

9. Námafjall

For a unique elopement backdrop, check out Námafjall! The landscape is similar to Yellowstone, with steaming pools and geysers surrounded by multicolored sulfur crystals. This otherworldly landscape is at the base of a volcanic mountain, and the geothermal heat causes small eruptions all over.

10. Vatnajokull National Park

Last (but not least) on this list of the best places to elope in Iceland is this national park, known for the ice fields surrounding the Vatnajokull glacier. Its landscape packs a lot of variety, from wildflower meadows, to waterfalls, to glacial fields – so you’ll have plenty to choose from for your elopement! You may even spot some reindeer wandering around.
